According to the scheduling tool Later, one hashtag means on average a 12.6% increase in engagement. By that logic, the more hashtags the better. Intuition fails here, though: too many hashtags make a photo less visible. Nobody knows exactly why many hashtags reduce reach. Most likely Instagram's algorithms treat such a photo as spam. Most users get the best results with 5-8 hashtags per photo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Create hashtags that set you apart.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Combine your own distinctive hashtags with widely used ones to increase reach. For example, if you run a food profile and launch a series of healthy desserts, using \"#dessert\" will not raise awareness of the new series or help organise your content. Your post would probably get lost among 813,000 posts using that hashtag. If instead you use \"#katesdesserts\", you can group all content tagged around that campaign and make it easy for your audience to find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
